WHY SPORTS ARE IMPORTANT

Studies have consistently shown that children who explore and participate in a variety of sports:

  • experience deeper enjoyment of their activities
  • show increased motivation throughout childhood
  • acquire fewer injuries
  • exhibit less burnout related stress
  • develop a broader base of physical and cognitive skills that lead to HIGHER levels of performance
  • lead more active lives as adults!

Appleton Parks and Recreation Youth Sports program features an exciting variety of sport leagues and camps for boys and girls ages 3 through 14!

Let's re-discover what's great about sports: Let's Play! REGISTER TODAY!

OUR SPORTS PHILOSOPHY

Appleton Park and Recreation is committed to providing a high quality youth sports experience for our participants, parents, coaches, and spectators.  All of our youth sports leagues are driven by the same core philosophy, to introduce and develop the skills needed for lifelong enjoyment of sports in a setting that is inclusive, engaging, and centered on FUN and sportsmanship.  Our programs promote equal playing time for all participants, regardless of ability or experience, and our coaches and league supervisors are given the training and tools they need to provide a positive, rewarding experience for children, prioritizing development over winning.

As a participant in our leagues, each receives a team t-shirt, practices once per week (in addition to scheduled league games), and will have a professional picture taken during the season.

COACHING

Appleton Parks & Recreation encourages active parental involvement in all of our youth sports programs and leagues.  A successful league relies on great volunteer coaches, and coaching is a rewarding way to positively impact the lives of our young athletes.  Volunteer coaches will have an opportunity to attend a formal coach's training session, and will be provided with comprehensive information, lesson plans, and support.  Coaches are expected to facilitate a weekly practice, attend scheduled weekly games, and coordinate the delivery of team / league information to players and parents on their roster.

Formal certification, training and practice materials are provided to our coaches at no cost, and adhere to a philosophy that places the developmental needs of youth athletes ahead of winning.  Our training emphasizes sportsmanship, safety, and positive role modeling as the pillars of successful youth coaching, in alignment with the core beliefs of Appleton Parks & Recreation.  In addition, each league / program will have a Program Supervisor and Sports Coordinator who will actively engage with our volunteer coaches to ensure a positive experience for coaches and players.

If you have the skill and confidence to lead and encourage kids, then you already have what it takes to be a great coach! CLICK HERE to complete a coaches application and scroll down on our Human Resources open positions list!

* Appleton Parks & Recreation performs criminal background checks on all of its volunteers.  Prospective coaches will be required to complete a background check application, and pass the background check before being formally assigned to their team.
