Bike Programs - Appleton Parks and Recreation

Urban Riders

Do you want your child to have the confidence to bike to the park or to the store? Want your child to have the training to ride their bikes safely and correctly? As an Urban Rider they’ll learn bike handling skills, rules of the road, and how to have fun getting wherever they want to go! Rides will include practice navigating intersections, roadways and changing lanes while riding to all corners of the city, visiting neighborhoods and businesses.

TWO LEVELS!!

LEVEL 1 – Trails & Lanes: This is our entry level class for children to learn how to bike on trails and bike lanes. Rides are approximately 4-6 miles, an easy 45 minutes.

LEVEL 2** -On the Road: Your child will learn how to use their gears appropriately on the streets! We will ride to student determined destinations. This class will run rain or shine and bikes need a front headlight and rear reflector. Rides are approximately 6-12 miles, a faster 45-60 minute ride.
**Attend our Bike Rodeo to skill test to a higher level of Urban Riders!

LOCATION: Telulah Park 1300 Newberry Street

REQUIREMENTS: Bring a helmet and a bike that is in good working condition. The first class will be skills, drills and evaluation. Attendance is required.

Bike Rodeos

The Bike Rodeo will help your child learn, at their level, the basic skills needed to bike more safely on the road. Stations will include looking back without swerving, braking techniques, riding straight while missing hazards and crossing busy streets safely. Other stations may include seeing and being seen, chaos corner and riding safely out of a driveway. In addition, children will learn basic bike sizing, bike maintenance and helmet sizing. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate so they too learn “cycling road sense.” This is a great opportunity for you and your child to learn safe bicycling together.
